It’s weekend. It’s that time of the year when “thirst-buds” become active. It’d been an awfully long time since my last loaded milkshake. It’d been a while since the Oreos hit some milk. More importantly, I needed some sugar-rush. I have a sweet tooth, thanks to my dad! Once again thanks to my dad, during childhood, I’d enjoyed experimenting with fruits, leftover dried fruits and nuts and all the boxes filled with cookies, chocolates and candies. In the spirit of old times this spring season has had me blending a fruit a day. Something new everyday. You can skip the added sugar and load up your milkshake recipe with natural goodness of fruits! #HappySpringShaking!
You can never go wrong with desserts and drinks. There is no perfect recipe for any given milkshake – you can add and subtract ingredients as you like and it’ll still taste heavenly. BUT. If you enjoy going to an ice cream parlor and licking away, you can bring that taste to your kitchen. No matter what flavor you like getting, the right ratio of ice cream to milk is key. Allow me to introduce you to fool-proof ways to home-making your Milkshake right!

My Improv & Notes
Before you dive right in — some generic notes to making ANY Milkshake!
- Put your milkshake glass in the freezer to get a nice chill on it
- Don’t use too much milk! You just want a splash of milk, 1/4 cup at the most. Any more than that will make the milkshake too runny. Using the right amount is very important – using too little milk can make it harder to drink at first, but it will become easier as the ice cream melts.
- NEVER add ice to a Milkshake! For the same reasons as above – the last thing you wanna do is dilute the rich creaminess of the milk + ice cream combo with frozen water. Save the ice for making smoothies.
- Is your ice cream tempered, – soft but not runny? Have you seen them beat the ice cream at ice cream/milkshake parlors? That step is key. If the ice cream is too hard, you’ll add too much milk to it and thin it out, diluting the concentration of the ice cream. You can also use frozen yogurt and low-fat ice cream!
- What ice cream to use for Milkshake? In most cases, you’re gonna wanna use vanilla ice cream. Yepp- that’s right, even if you’re making a chocolate, strawberry , peach or milkshake of some other flavor, vanilla ice cream is gonna act like the blank canvas that you can flavor with chocolate syrup, fruit, or even cookie crumbles. Using flavored ice cream can sometimes make your milkshake overly sweet. Some of the milkshakes at local stores taste like they’re made by diluting artificial sweet syrup – that’s not how you want your milkshake to taste like!
My Recipe Corner – How to make homemade milkshake RIGHT!
Chocolate Milkshake Recipe
- You can put the glass you’ll be serving the milkshake in inside of the freezer to let it chill while the vanilla ice cream (endlessly customizable, but you can use any flavor of your choice) softens at room temperature until it is the consistency of soft-serve
- Add three generous scoops of ice cream to the blender, along with 1/4 cup of whole milk; you can also use skimmed milk, or even dairy-free. The richer the milk, the richer the shake. If your shake is too thick, add more milk; if it’s too thin, add more ice cream — this depends on how you like your milkshake to be
- Finally, the add-ins – squirt in around 1/4 cup of chocolate syrup and add a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. But hey, now’s your chance to get creative! There are numerous options to chose from, here’s some creative fodder —
- strawberry syrup, Maple syrup, espresso grounds,
- malt powder, Nutella, or peanut butter
- A spoonful or two of sweetened condensed milk (or a splash of cream) plus a couple of fat pinches of cinnamon
- Bourbon or rum
- A frozen banana or a handful of frozen berries — strawberries, blueberries, or mango chunks
- Cookies like graham crackers or Oreos – LOVE these!
- Any chocolate/candy bar, broken into pieces
- Blend until smooth and serve in the frosty glass. You can top it with generous amount of whipped cream, sprinkles, crushed graham cracker or oreo crumbs, a cherry, or whatever suits your fancy, or just enjoy it plain. Here are some topping ideas that might come in handy –
- Candy, Sprinkles or a sliced strawberry slit down the middle and placed on the side of the glass
- Layer two flavors of shake for a parfait effect. Like they serve in the restaurants!
- Stick a straw through a mini doughnut and serve! 😉
Tall glasses are the go-to choice for most shake makers, but sipping through a margarita glass or a frosty glass mug won’t spoil it!
